From Fleece to Beautiful Combed Top

Wool combing is a foundational spinning technique that turns washed fleece into smooth, parallel fibers ready for spinning. These fibers, known as top, make a smooth, lustrous yarn with beautiful stitch definition. While the combing process—and the combs themselves—might seem daunting, instructor Heavenly Bresser demystifies each step, guiding you through the combing process, starting with fiber selection and finishing with beautifully combed top.

In this video, you will learn:

  • Which fiber types are most suitable for combing
  • Best practices for safe and easy combing
  • How to load your combs efficiently
  • Techniques for transferring fiber between combs with ease
  • Tips for managing fiber waste, nepps, and second cuts
  • How to identify when the fiber is fully combed
  • Steps for removing fibers from your combs with a diz to create continuous top

Before long, you’ll be able to create smooth combed top ready for spinning.

An Introduction from Instructor Heavenly Bresser

By following Heavenly’s clear instructions, you’ll be able to transform fleece into high-quality top, ready for spinning into beautiful yarns. Enjoy experimenting with different breeds as you develop your own combing skills.
